Render

Render is a protective coating, normally applied to external walls, to prevent damage from wet and windy weather. It normally comes as a dry powder which is to be mixed with water and applied on the surface; then left to set. You may need to apply more than one coat depending on the type of render mix you choose. Pre-mixed render and putty render are also available. It is both practical and decorative, supplied in smooth and textured finishes and a variety of colours. So, whether you’re looking for smooth or pebble dash render, we’ve got the right type for you.

Render can also be made from a variety of different mixes and materials, each with its own benefits. Silicone render is the most common as it is known for its combination of longevity, water resistance, and self-cleaning properties, as dirt and grime slide off of it more easily. It is also breathable, meaning moisture can escape from inside the building without letting any in, protecting it from mildew and rot.

Lime render is also incredibly popular thanks to its versatility and all-rounder benefits. It is a type of flexible render, meaning it moves slightly with the structure it is applied to, which reduces the risk of cracking. This means it is particularly well-suited to older buildings which are more likely to move over time. Like silicone render, it is incredibly breathable making it excellent for preventing condensation build-up and moisture damage.

One thing to consider about lime is that the setting time can take weeks, which is why some people opt for cement render instead. Another alternative is one coat render, or monocouche render. As the name suggests, it only requires a single layer, so setting time is faster. However, it isn’t as breathable or flexible.
